I assume you are not familiar with the British TV show the Goodies? I remember The Goodies. They aired on Public television like Dr. Who and The French Chef (Julia Child). I think I saw The Young Ones on Public, but I might have seen them on The Comedy Channel which morphed into Comedy Central and started following the MTV strategy of less music and more reporting/reality shows. Comedy Central became less funny. And I still miss Rachel Sweet.

The Goodies stand the test of time. I agree with the rest of what you said. Comedy is more about insults without being clever about it nowadays. Give me a good Goon Show any day of the week. Or failing that Monty Python will do. My first exposure to Poli-Comedy was All in the Family, Good Times, Chico & The Man, Sanford & Son, The Jeffersons and Saturday Night Live. Before that I only watched spy movies, westerns, horror and science fiction. Although Star Trek was often splattered with politics, often clumsily or otherwise way too obvious. Like the Nazi planet. These days politics is everywhere. And coming from so many directions it's largely nonsensical and we have people showing up to protest without knowing the reason. I think people will do anything to take a unique "selfie". Consider how many of them fell to their death doing this. What amazes me is that nobody ever made a Clay-mation porno!
