if you can't rely on your own flesh and blood, then who can you rely on? no one to celebrate christmas with, birthdays, etc etc etc
I should be used to it by now (hell I've lived without a family for most of my adult life), but honestly it never gets easier
especially as you get older I've found

Over the last 7 years I lost most of my family. A century ago there were a hundred people in my family. Today there are three, myself, wife and daughter. We realized 30 years ago that we were both from dying family lines. That was part of the attraction I guess. But when it all happened in basically 3 waves of death for both of us, we had to adapt (something humans are good at). One thing that has helped has been diverting holidays. It may seem trite, but a holiday seems to lose effect when you celebrate it on an alternate date. We take advantage of this.
