I find this strangely interesting. lol My mother was born 12/21/1919, and her grandparents had a large working farm. She has said a number of times she really wasn't aware there was any kind of depression, per se, until she heard other people talking about it, and even then she claimed she didn't really understand.
My grandmother and all of her female siblings were excellent seamstresses, so I know there were any number of hands to make clothes for the crowd. Now they (my "grand-people") all lived as young to early middle age adults during that time. They all were hoarders of strange (and mostly useless) things. I've been told that could be a result of living through the depression. idk
My mother's kind, hard-working grandparents really didn't do anybody any favors they way they raised her. They reared her to think she is a princess.

They reared her to think she is a princess. This reminds me of my maternal grandmother. She was born about the same time, 1913 I think, and was also raised on a farm with her 12 siblings. Yes, 12! The way she described daily life a person didn't need that much money, her family would just trade stuff with other families. There was a sugar ration going on, and I know they had coffee, so I do know they bought those things. And she also kept things I consider useless: bread bags, aluminum foil and such. After she died my uncle was organizing her stuff for an action and discovered that some of the plates and coffee cups they had been using for decades were collectors items, lol. One plate brought about $80 and would have brought in more if it hadn't been so heavily used. We all called her "granny".

I was horrified when I saw what I'd done. About the depression...I do remember Mama talking about the only thing she knew of the depression was that they had to limit the amount of sugar they used, and she LOVED sugar. I really found that shocking as she was super trim from the time she was young to now, forever ago. I also remember her saying the coffee and sugar were the only things she thought they bought at the store. Mama's grandparents (her mother's people) also had 13 children. yeah - THIRTEEN! 2 little boys died young but the rest lived about forever. So, for those lucky ones that had farms, and lots of workers (lol - children) I believe their life continued on much the same as it had been before.

Here's a soup line during the depression. Notice how everyone is arranged into lines, but not by color. The "Free Soup" window sign looks like a computer font.
