Since the US was still closely tied to agriculture during the depression, people improvised transportation since gasoline was expensive. If you had horses you had to keep fed anyway, putting them to work made more sense when the money could be spent on food. Double the Horsepower!!!!!! Another way to get around was to convert your car to wood gas. It's a steel enclosure filled with wood and then a fire is lit beneath it. The wood gasifies and the engine runs on the gas.
