Oddly enough, the depression didn't slow movies down very much. Like radio it became a medium of hope. But I open with a trailer for a movie set during the depression starring Steve Martin in a role that's surreal and not particularly comedic. It's basically a musical about the depression made in 1981. But its a fascinating study of the time.
This scene really captures the vibe of the whole movie. In it the guy who end up dancing in the rain comes into the diner and Steve's character gives him I think a dime or a nickel. Since the man is starving he tries to kiss the hand of the man who just gave him a meal. Steve rejects it and recoils. The movie gets away with a few things you don't see these days. But it's a work of art.
